Will Rogers

Former estate of American humorist and poloist, Will Rogers State Historic Park lies in the Santa Monica Mountains in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. Rogers bought the property in 1922 where he built a small weekend cottage, and in 1926 constructed a polo field on the land. The track attracted the company of elite Hollywood celebrities including Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Darryl Zanuck, Hal Roach and Walt Disney. Soon the property became home to the Roger’s family in 1928 when Will, his wife Betty, and their three children moved to the ranch and the cottage was expanded to its present size of thirty-one rooms. After the passing of Rogers and his wife, the estate was declared a state park in 1944.
The ranch is maintained in its original state and reflects Will Rogers’ roots in horsemanship, starting with the polo field, which is the first thing the visitor sees when looking south from the parking area. The field is now the only outdoor polo field in Los Angeles County. Today, some of the most important polo tournaments in the USA take place here in this park.
